A new island has emerged near Japan's Ogasawara island chain after an undersea volcano erupted in October 2023. The island, about 100 meters in diameter, was formed by phreatomagmatic eruptions. This is not the first time such an event has occurred in the area, as the Ogasawara island chain is a volcanic arc consisting of over 30 islands. However, the new island may not last long due to its fragile volcanic rocks that are easily eroded by waves and currents.
