We've now learned the identity of the man investigators say shot and killed Cowlitz County Deputy Justin DeRosier Saturday night.

Now to an update on the death of a cowlitz county deputy... 29-year-old deputy justin derosier was shot in the line of duty sunday.

We're now learning more about the man investigators say pulled the trigger.

Sheriff brad thurman: "he is 33 years of age - brian butts" in a press conference on the steps of the hall of justice cowlitz county sheriff brad thurman named the man who took the life of his deputy -- justin derosier.this all happening minutes before another man arrested in connection to the killing -- "they were associates"-- faced a judge.nats "you have the right to remain silent."

Matthew veatch is charged with rendering criminal aid in the first degree...after investigators say he helped brian butts hide a handgun -- and escape the scene of the deadly shooting."matthew stated butts gave him a handgun to "get rid of" .

Matthew put the gun in a locked gun ccabinet in his bedroom.

.... they walked through the woods for several hours."documents reveal veatch was one of the first people to see butts after he shot deputy derosier --he told investigators butts told him what he did --veatch then hid butts in an abandoned barn -- and later told officers he didn't know where he was.we now know butts was killed in a shootout with kelso police just after 7 o clock sunday night.sheriff brad thurman: "this was not the result we wanted to see with the suspect.

Not only have we been robbed of an exceptional deputy and father - justin derosier - we've been robbed of finding answers as to why from the suspect."

Brian butts is the half-brother of daniel butts... who killed rainier police chief ralph painter back in 2011... and was sentenced to prison after he pleaded guilty to the crime just a few weeks ago.
