In campaign 2019 tonight- tonight we're following the money... Mayoral candidates nadine woodward and ben stuckart are making their push for your vote in the general election.
But, it's important to know who is supporting their campaigns with cash.
Our maher kawash has you covered with the details.
Maher ... The race for mayor in spokane has given us a little bit of everything.
Public safety, homelessness, and the housing crisis.
But, what about the money?
Kevin"i think this will be the most expensive mayor race in the history of this city."03 about 500 thousand dollars has already been spent between the two campaigns ... And former law maker kevin parker says it will probably get over one million dollars by november.
Woodward already has some notable contributions from the washington realtors association ... While stuckart brings in union contributions nationwide.
But only some of that results in votes.
07;16;50kevin parker/ political expert"over the years there have definitley been groups that have come out on both sides of the political aisle who said hey i know my union or organization went this way but that's not representative of me."07 each candidate has their own kind of campaign support ... But what really separates the two is third party expenditures.
That's the money ... Which isn't controlled or supported by a candidate ... But can be made for or against them.
Woodward has had about 150 thousand come in from the washington realtors committee and the spokane good government alliance.
Nadine 01;34;00"it takes money to get the message out and we have a very diverse group of people who are contributing to our campaign who like our message of making spokane the best it can be."
14 stuckart on the other hand has almost no third party expenditures ... But has still raised nearly 190 thousand dollars.
07;13;44"i just think it's being dwarfed by the outside money ... Citizens united nationwide said pacs can spend unlimited amounts and they spent 150,000 on the primary and i think we'll continue to see that ... But we hope that people power and knocking on doors counters that outside money"16 and as the money keeps going up, the stakes do, too.
Kevin"i think both campaigns see this as entering the playoffs ... They've been in the regular season, they have an idea for what the score is ... But now it's a playoff, emotions are higher ... Voters are becoming more engaged by the day."09 i asked both candidates if they've reached out former candidates like shawn poole, kelly cruz, or jonathan bingle for support ... And they both have, woodward says she expects an endorsement soon from one of them while stuckart is meeting with some this week.
