C1 3 major opioid lawsuit in oklahoma.

L3: now at 11 white clark county prinicpal faces child porn charges a principal in clark county is facing child pornography charges.

L3: now at 11 white fighting teen vaping in schools alexus sot tease good evening and welcome i'm tom kenny and i'm veronica jean seltzer.

We are following breaking news tonight in rural jackson county.

According to state police... they're breaking news tonight in rural jackson county.

According to state police... they're investigating a shooting that happened near annville earlier this evening.

They say the victim was taken to the hospital in london after being shot... after a family dispute.

Right now... no one is under arrest, but state police say one person is being questioned.

Good evening and welcome i'm tom kenny and i'm veronica jean seltzer.

A landmark decision in oklahoma found johnson and johnson accountable for effects of the opioid epidemic in that state.

This is a first for the entire country.

One expert who testified against the drug maker..is a lexington-native.

Abc 36's monica harkins talked to him for our top story at 11.

Dahn-ish maz-loomdoost "if you've ever seen law and order and you have those court room expectations its actually kind of true."

Dr. danesh mazloomdoost grew up in lexington and is now the medical director at wellward regenerative medicine in lexington.

He says he's an advocate for finding other types of ways to treat pain.

"we want to build the model of managing these conditions that does in a more sustainable manner and does so without exposing patients to unnecessary risks."

Risks like opioid addiction and dependency.

This is one of the reasons the state of oklahoma recruited him to be an expert in its case against johnson and johnson.

Dr. mazloomdoost says while he's happy with the outcome..johnson and johnson being held accountable...he says there's still more work to be done.

"it's not even a drop in the bucket because with all the damage that has taken place all the problems that have been created.

We have about three decades during which intelligent discourse around managing orthopedic and neurological pain problems essentially stopped."

As he says...people turned to prescribing opioids as a cure all.

The johnson and johnson trial could set a precedent for current cases in kentucky.

Over the past two years kentucky's attorney general has filed complaints against more than half-a-dozen opioid pharmeutical companies...includi ng johnson-and- johnson.

Dr. mazloomdoost says in the past his philosophy about non-opioid treatment has been in the minority...but he's optimistic that is changing.

"my hope is that this at least sets a precedence that we continue to build upon.

We're facing the larger scale issue of how do we approach health."

In lexington, monica harkins, abc 36 news.

### we also talked to recovering addicts struggling from substance abuse about the recent change in ideology about drug overdoses.

We talked to memebers from narcotics anonymous today about addiction.

While we can't show their faces or reveal their last names...dave has been clean for 44- years and says the social perception about drug addicts is moving in the right direction.

"now more of society views addiction as a disease, where years ago, it was viewed as addicts were criminals.

Now, it's more as a disease."

The members say when it's looked at in that manner...getting help can seem more doable to someone who struggles with addiction.

A lot of money is on the way to the university of kentucky to fight the opioid epidemic.

The university announced today it's receiving one million dollars in federal grants... ... but the money isn't going to the hospital...as you might expect...the college of social work will head-up the new project.

U-k says to achieve long-term sobriety...mental health professionals are taking on an increased importance.

The money will go towards students getting hands-on experience...training in appalachian communities.

Kalea beener says the project is a win-win for the commonwealth and students.

"not just support our communities in treating this substance use disorder, but really also to help our students to facilitate knowledge and gain skill and working with folks with substance use disorders, because its going to be anywhere and everywhere."

She also says the money will be used over three years...starting now for the fall semester.

In clark county, a principal has been arrested in a child pornography case.

State police say 54-year old phillip todd wilson faces two counts of sending and receiving child porn.

According to the school's website, wilson is the principal at clark county area technology center.

He also served on the clark county board of education in 2016.

Lexington's frederick douglass high school is reviewing its security policies at school events after a scare at its home opener football game friday night.

The school says a middle schooler in the stands shouted someone had a gun, which caused widespread panic.

L3: white district reviewing policies after shooting scare at game frederick douglass high school this was the football game at frederick douglass friday..

Against bryan station.

You can see in the video, the game was interrupted by fans running in a panic from the stands... some taking cover by laying down in the bleachers, the players laying flat on the ground to become less of a potential target.

The school says it found no gun, or evidence of shots fired, despite social media posts to the contrary.

We talked to jon akers, a former high school principal in fayette county who now heads up the kentucky center for school safety.

L3: white jon akers kentucky center for school safety "the bottom line here is if we're gonna stop this from happening in our communities around our state we've gotta flex strong on this thing and make sure kids get the message that we're not gonna put up with it."

L3: white district reviewing policies after shooting scare at game frederick douglass high school akers say it may come to security checkpoints being at high school games, similar to those at college or pro games.

Fs txt quote:statement from fayette county schools on frederick douglass football game shooting scare "we w ... in a statement... the school district says quote "we will be examining our policies and practices to ensure the safety of everyone who gathers to cheer on our student athletes, which may include limitations on unaccompanied minors at games."

One study says the number of middle and high schoolers in the state who are vaping has doubled in just the past two years.

And... as abc36's alexus larson found out when she visited one kentucky school district... this trend shows no sign of slowing down.

"the franklin county high school principal says vaping is a lot more popular among our teens and he's noticing it in his school.

At least once a week he says he's dealing with a problem that relates to vaping."

It's everywhere.

Principal, charles lewis says kids are vaping in the bathrooms - and sometimes are getting away with it in the classroom.

Franklin county public schools.... like many schools in the state... do not allow tobacco products.... including vaping.... on school property.

.

The school safety coordinator says if a student is caught vaping - the consequence is in school suspension - and if it happens again the consequences get worse.

But lewis says punishment shouldn't be the only way to try and deter young people from picking up... or sticking with... this potentially dangerous habit.

:48-:54 "talk to your kids and make sure that they know it's not a healthy alternative to tobacco and just stay involved."

Reporting in franklin county, alexus larson, abc36 news.

From taking away coverage that would devastate kentucky families.

It is estimated that 156,000 fires have been spotted in the amazon this year alone-the highest number in nearly a decade?

We saw those fires' terrifying speed outside of this ranch on the border of brazil and bolivia.

Matt on the truck : "you can see that it's chewing up not only that dry brush but those palm trees are acting like kindling."

We were quickly surrounded... matt on the truck: "turn around!

Back up!

Back up!"

...and, forced drive away from the ranch.

Matt on the truck: "wow that entire farm where we were just minutes ago seems to be gone!"

Those farmers did survive, but the fire creating a charred hellscape.

Today brazilian president jair bolsonaro saying his government will find a "solution" and "give the world satisfaction" while also lobbing insults at french president emmanuel macron who yesterday led the g7's response to pledge more than $22 million dollars in aid.

Bolsonaro has been criticized for promoting the development of brazil's untamed lands.

Today we set out on the pantanal - the world's largest watershed -scientist diego tells us it's famous wildlife threatened by those fires?

And bolsonaro's policies?

Mg so you're saying his economic policies are putting the environment at risk?

Exactly?

Oc tag: the dry season here is forecast to last about two more months.

But the concern from scientists here is that these fires could put parts of brazil over the tipping point making dry season longer and turning forest into savannah up next... the latest on tropical storm dorian.

Including why puerto rico could have a difficult clean-up.

We're following a developing story in the tropics... where tropical i called aspen dental because i had a dental emergency.

They assessed it right away.

We're going to get you out of pain right now and be able to keep the tooth because that was really important to me.

She sat down, "this is what we're looking at financially, can you work with this?"

She didn't try to focus on anything that was unnecessary.

She's like "let's get you comfortable now."

That was being treated royally.

At aspen dental, we're all about yes.

Like yes to payments on your timeline not ours.

Yes to zero down and zero interest.

And yes, we're all about the royal treatment.

Tropical storm dorian is gaining strength as it spins towards the already devastated island-- and now the trump administration is pulling $155 million dollars in fema disaster relief.

Homeland security is shifting the money to fund support for its policy of returning migrants to mexico.

The timing may impact potential relief efforts in the already fragile puerto rico.

U-k athletics announcing on tuesday the game is completely soldout through u-k.

Full season ticket packages including the game are no longer available.

Last season, after 31-straight wins over the cats, kentucky finally took down the gators...this time at the swamp.

The rematch will be september 14th...kickoff under lights...at 7 p-m.

In case you missed it, late last night the kentucky football team got a huge commit from one of the best transfers in the country.

Former l-s-u cornerback kelvin joseph deciding to transfer to kentucky.

Joseph played in 11 games last year for the tigers.

He was a consensus top-50 recruit which would make him one of the highest- ranked recruits to ever attend kentucky.

He will have to sit out this year, but he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Speaking of transfers and eligibility...u-k athletics has still not gotten word back from the n-c- a-a on xavier peters.

Kentucky and peters submitted their paperwork at the beginning of the month, but have not heard anything back.

Mark stoops says everything isn't done on their end...f-s-u has paperwork to submit as well, but at the end of the day when and if he is cleared...inserting him immediately isn't the most realistic.

The morehead state eagles kick their season off this thursday.

They will take on union college...kickoff set for 6 at jayne stadium.
