Erdogan says goal in Syria is to 'eliminate terrorist groups', return refugees

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that the goal of military operation "Peace Spring " in Syria was to 'eliminate terrorist groups' and PKK bases in northern Syria.

Rough cut (no reporter narration).

Speaking at the Turkic Council summit in Baku President Erdogan said that he plans to return home more than three million Syrian refugees who are currently in Turkey.

Turkey started a military operation on October 9 saying its objective is to clear its southern frontier region of the YPG, which it views as a terrorist organization, and form a "safe zone" 20 miles into Syrian territory where it wants to settle millions of Syrian refugees.

Ankara also pledged to take responsibility for Islamic State militants within the "safe zone," but said it would not be accountable for others.

The fighting has raised Western concerns that the Kurds, holding large tracts of northern Syria previously controlled by Islamic State, would be unable to keep thousands of jihadists in jail and tens of thousands of their family members in camps.
