Iran Announces Nuclear Deal Violations 40 Years After Hostage Crisis.
The Middle East nation announced that it will double the number of advanced centrifuges used to enrich uranium.
Using such centrifuges will allow the country to enrich uranium 10 times faster than is allowed under the 2015 nuclear agreement made between Iran and other nations.
Made by the head of Iran's nuclear program, the announcement came on the 40th anniversary of the 1979 hostage crisis.
During the crisis, 52 Americans were held hostage in the U.S. embassy in Tehran.
The embassy was overtaken in retaliation for CIA involvement in Iran's 1953 coup.
Made up of citizens and diplomats, the hostages were held for over a year.
President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the nuclear plan in 2018, followed by significant economic sanctions against Iran.
Negotiated in part between the Obama administration and Iran, the intention of the deal was to limit Iran's nuclear missile capabilities
