STILL PHOTOGRAPH OF FIREFIGHTERS LOOKING AT BLACK SMOKE IN HORIZON STORY: Fire and rescue teams recovered a koala on Thursday (November 21) as bushfires spread across New South Wales.

Firefighters spotted the koala at the edge of a forest as fires approached.

At first, the koala retreated back towards the fire but the NSW Striketeam, consisting of firefighters from a dozen stations, ran back into the long grass to rescue the koala.

Firefighter Wayne Koppel took off his coat to pick up the koala, carried it away to safety, and gave it some water.

The koala was later released at a safe location that would not be threatened by fire.

The Australian state was gasping under the worst levels of air pollution ever recorded on Friday (November 22) as smoke from widespread fires caused a spike in hospital visits and hazards including poor visibility for drivers.

Sydney, the country's most populous city, was blanketed in a thick haze for the fourth consecutive day, pushing it into a rare and repeat appearance in the list of top 10 cities with the worst air pollution in the world.
