RETAILERS HOPE TO CAPITALIZE ON HOLIDAY WEEKEND DEALS

Today marks the official kick off to the holiday shopping season...and many are spending they day taking advantage of the deals.

But as kq2's johnson shows us those deals last longer than just today.

&lt;&lt;ron johnson reporting shoppers are out and about in search of everything on their wish lists blankets, bedsets anything like that.

[zacary saxton] keyboards, mouse and a headset and of course, they're all looking for that perfect gift for just the right price.

[jennifer friedrichsen] we love the deals, the deals are a lot better than we can get any other time of the year.

On this black friday, shoppers are pulling out all the stops for the perfect shopping experience, this woman told us she bought several hundred dollars worth of merchandise for just over $100 bucks.

[crystal drenen] it's actually taller than me and i'm about 5'4" so..but the way shoppers and retailers approach the shopping event is changing.

[panning] years ago shopping wasn't on thanksgiving day it was we get up and stand in the cole freezing lines outside.

[ron johnson] here at east hills mall on black friday, you're sure to find shoppers but as any retailer will tell you anymore the deals go beyond just one day.

Starting as early as thanksgiving afternoon more and more stores are opening their doors.[hoa nguyen] it's not just one day or one weekend anymore it's actually throughout the week type deal, to get the guests excited and give more of an opportunity to shop.

Many of the deals now last through the weekend, retailers say it gives customers more time to jump start their holiday shopping.

[nguyen] electronics, the massagers or toys are really big i've seen.

As well as finding that one gift to splurge on.

Online retailers will be offering their best deals for shoppers on cyber monday.
