Two public officials in Belmont say they got tested for the Corona virus after coming in contact with someone who tested positive for the disease.

On that map -- tishomingo county's first reported case.

In a statement from the city of belmont, mayor buddy wiltshire said the city's police chief donald thomas tested positive for covid-19.

Wtva's sydney darden is live in the studio where she had a chance to speak with both of them over the phone.

Sydney what did they say about his diagnosis?

Emily, both of them told me their doctors say although it's been almost 2 weeks since either of them came in contact with the same person that tested positive for the virus, they're not out of the woods yet.

They gave me an update on their prognosis and plans to move forward after receiving their test results earlier today.

Belmont police chief donald thomas says so far so good just hours after receiving the phone call he tested positive for coronavirus.

Sot donald thomas- 7:43 "after i found out about the two deaths, i wanted to take every precaution."

One of those two deaths is mother lizzie boyd, pictured here in a purple suit alongside thomas and mayor buddy wiltshire at a church event on march 8th.

The other death is another church member, elder burnell hoyle, who attended the same event and also later died from the coronavirus.

(who said this??) the event took place nearly two weeks before city leaders implemented any changes to minimize the spread of the covid-19 virus.

It's still uncertain how thomas picked up the virus.

But after hearing that he could be at risk thomas says he immediately contacted mayor wiltshire and the two of them didn't waste anytime.

Sot "in our positions, meeting the public we felt like it still wouldn't be a bad idea to go get tested."

Wiltshire's test came back negative but he says thomas' positive test is a hard reminder for everyone to keep their distance.

As for thomas he says he will continue taking his diagnosis in stride.

Both thomas and wiltshire are self quarantining for the next few weeks just to be safe.

In the meantime, wilshire is urging everyone to abide by cdc guidelines and at stay least six feet away from each other at all times and not gather in groups larger than 10 emily back to you.
