A new outreach program aims to keep homeless people safe during COVID-19.

Of the community's most vulnerable populations.

Kezi nine news reporter connor mccarthy is live in downtown eugene -- to show us how the city is helping the homeless.

Matt and renee-- the city of eugene says starting this week..

Teams fanned out across the city .... including here in dowtown.... to help provide resouces to the homeless community.

The teams of two to four people went out across the city handing out food... water..

Hygeine supplues, and tents.

The city says they are trying to provide supplies to those who are experiencing homeless so they can stay in place as much as possible.

City officials are also working on providing a centralized location for the unhoused to pick up supplies.

But the city says communitcation between all local governments in the metro area has been key in managing this crisis.

We have a lot ofm people who are dedicated who care about their community whether it will be at the city of eugene, the city of springfield, lane county, we all care, we're all working together this is a dynamic situation we're continuing to learn more.

Richardson also says the city has set up about 50 portable hand washing stations and 40 portable restrooms around the city.

Each team is also educating the homeless population on the most recent upadtes on covid-19.

The city says they want the whole community, housed or unhoused, to do their part in flattening the curve.
