Purdue faculty and volunteers are helping recognize students set to graduate this year despite commencement being canceled.

Are helping recognize students set to graduate this year despite commencement being canceled.

As news 18's balint szalavari reports, they are helping bring graduation to students' homes.

Graduation at purdue is a momentous occasion for both students and faculty.

Bosgraaf: "commencement is really unique and special.

There is not a lot of big universities that have very personalized graduations anymore.

But with commencement canceled this year, faculty like stephanie bosgraaf got creative.

She says the gold and black decided to bring commencement to students' homes.

Bosgraaf: "we knew we had to do something for them, even though it couldn't be as great as our in person ceremony."

Senior assistant registrar chris pass says graduation boxes are made for each student set to graduate in may.

Pass: we're mailing out about anywhere from 15 hundred to 18 hundred a day, and we have 75 hundred total."

And every box is unique.

Graduates will receive a custom box with their name, tassel, and purdue apparel.

Graduation and academic records manager barb ladage says current events shouldn't take away from students being recognized for their achievements.

Ladage: "students have worked very hard for four years to obtain a degree from purdue, which is not an easy feat.

And it would not be fair to them to not be able to be recognized."

And ladage hopes the boxes will bring students some joy during these times.

Pass: "it's just very important to let these students know how much we care about them and are proud of them."

Reporting from purdue, balint szalavari, news 18.

The boxes willontinue to be made through friday.

Ladage (luh-daje) says students who graduate this may will be allowed to walk in a future august or december ceremony.
