Today it became a bit clearer with a huge announcement allowing horses and their connections more opportunities to make it to derby day.

Abc 36 sports director bryan kennedy breaks down how the road to the kentucky derby has been extended.

Churchill down wants to make sure the best three olds are in the starting date for the 146th running of the kentucky derby on the first saturday in september.to make sure that happens, on tuesday the track announced the possible addition of about a dozen races to be added to the road to the kentucky derby.churchill downs director of communications darren rogers says when choosing these races they not only considered the importance of these races, but also where they are held.darren rogerssenior director of communications, churchill downs."it's very important for us to have regional representation so we take a look at race tracks and races that have typically been run within that calendar year both in the west coast, the midwest and also the east coast.

And we think we've identified those important races.

The more important the race is, the higher the point value."big changes for the road to the derby don't stop there.new dates have not been set for the last two legs of the triple crown...the preakness and the belmont.it actually possible those two races could come before the derby.rogers"having a triple crown run out of order is not unprecedented.

In fact, many moons ago the derby and the preakness were run on the same day in one point in time."if that happens, you can expect to see those races carrying big implications when it comes to the derby.rogers"we'll use those races as part of our qualifying system.

The winner of the preakness or the belmont stakes if it's carded in advance, would receive 150 points.

The most points we've awarded."as with everything right now in the sports world...there is still a lot of uncertainty and nothing is set in stone.rogers"we're trying to make the best decision that's in front of us right now.

What we did today was announce the races that would be under consideration.

We don't have dates for a lot of these races just yet.
