Landlords concerned about eviction ban extension

Property managers are worried about the financial bind following the eviction ban extension.

List.

With the passing of a new house bill freezing evictions through september -- some property managers say it's put them in a bind kezi 9 news reporter julian mininsohn spoke with one landlord who feels the order is completely one- sided.

(julian) while the eviction ban is helping out those who can't pay rent, one landlord tells me she is concerned because there are tenants who are taking advantage of the situation.

(megan hunt) "having that option is great for people who are struggling right now."

But not for landlords.

(michelle gardner) "they look at the next door guy who is not paying, not because he can't afford it,but because he chooses not to.

Even good tenants who have been with me a long time are starting to wonder why they should have to pay."

The house bill states that tenants can't be evicted for nonpayment through september 30th.

They also will have until march 31st of next year to pay back any outstanding balance.

(michelle gardner) "that just gives them time to add up a cost that they're never going to be able to pay for."

Michelle gardner of shooting stars investments in douglas county says while most of her tenents are working with her to pay rent -- a third of them aren't.

Gardner says the bill doesn't take landlord's livlehoods into consideration.

(michelle gardner) "it's our retirement.

We can't turn around and sell.

We don't have 401k's or any of that.

We are self-employed."
