County... today is day one of starkville's new mask ordinance that requires people to wear a face covering inside businesses and city-owned buildings.

Wtva's bronson woodruff spoke with starkville residents to get their feelings on the new mandate.

Here on main street, people are going about their business as usual.

It's rather quiet here this evening, but those who have been out are mostly all wearing masks.

Businesses also have signs up saying for customers to wear masks when they come inside.

Take pkg: nat pop: "i've learned to get used to it."

Wearing masks has become a bit of a norm today.

Businesses in starkville are again required to have everyone who enters wear one, this following the board of aldermen's vote yesterday to mandate that masks be worn inside businesses and city-owned buildings.

One starkville resident said he thinks the ordinance will help to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

"from what i understand, wearing masks keep us safer, and keeps the spread of covid down."

Zac ashmore says he feels the ordinance is necessary.

"the libertarian side of me says don't tell me what to do, but, but the good citizen side of me says this is the right thing to do."

He added he has confidence in starkville's governing bodies, including the mayor.

"i have confidence that she's going to do what she feels is the right thing to do."

Another starkville resident said he feels the same way.

"i don't have a problem with it at all because i feel like it is protecting me and other people."

Michael jones said he thinks leaders passed the ordinance for a good reason.

"i think it's great because a lot of people have gotten relaxed, you know, and they're not wearing masks, some people are, some people are not."

Jones said he believes the ordinance will help slow the spread of the virus.

"people are getting sick, people have loved ones that have died.

I think a lot of people are not taking it serious, so i think it would help people that's not taking it so serious to get it under control."

The people we were able to speak with today all agreed they were fine with the mandatory mask rule.

They said that's because it's intended to help keep everyone safe.
