Coach's Corner: Howard Part 2

BILL SHANKS CONTINUES HIS CONVERSATION WITH HOWARD FOOTBALL COACH PAUL CARROLL IN THE COACH'S CORNER.

Trying to get back to the playoffs after just losing out and going five and five last year.

Okay.

You talked a little bit earlier about the, the defense, um, with your offense, having a lot of changes, especially with skill players.

Are you going to have to rely on your deep bench a little bit early on in the season, maybe until your offense gets its legs under it?

Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.

And that's something we've we met as a coaching staff and, you know, we've got to play good defense and that's something that's me being a defensive coach at defense coordinator for a long time and being the head coach, we've got to make sure that we're going to be stout on defense and in great on special teams. and, you know, as something that hurt us a little bit last year was special teams. and we'd gotten to understand those two are huge to be able to have a successful season.

You've got a couple of dbs that are gone from last year, chris thompson, jiuquan jackson, um, andrew garnette, augustus white, couple of your linebackers, your front, your front players up front going to have to be important for you.

Yeah, they are.

And actually we're going to, uh, you know, play a little bit of base defense.

And you know what the times nowadays is, is as far as the way the covid is going, you can't throw a lot at these kids and you've got to play a lot of kids both ways.

And that's what we're doing right now.

So some of those offensive linemen are gonna have to learn how to play defense.

So as a coaching staff, we've got to be as simple as possible play based defense and let the kids play and just swarm the football.

All right.

Finally, you are moving from region to region four in quad-a.

You got balwyn perry, rutland's spalding, west laurens, and, and west side, if you change, as you got married, person's out there, but still, um, some very, very tough teams and some good, uh, good city robberies in that group, too, right?

It is.

There is.

I'll tell you.

We're very excited about the new region of got a lot of good coaches there.

They do a great job of you.

The only thing i hate the fact is, is right off the bat.

We do the corn flipped and we get witness lawrence again, starting out in the region.

I think that's been the past three years down at west.

Lawrence is very tough to win down there and, and, uh, you know, our kids here, we've got to start understanding that we've got to be able to win on the road.

No doubt about it.

First game will be get central at henderson stadium on the 3rd of september.
