Back to School Health & Wellness

Lyssa High talks to Wellness Expert, Terra Wellington, about what we can do to keep up with our kids health and wellness.

Go down, and it's also b much less humid, so a nicer wee c1 3 lyssa high: it's that time of year for parents to gear up for kids returning back to school, and whether it's online school, homeschooling or in-person classes, health and wellness is on everyone's mind.

And joining us today with some tips, as we navigate back to school, is wellness lifestyle contributor, terra wellington.

Welcome back to the show, terra.

Terra wellingto...: hey, thank you so much for having me lyssa high: well, and let's get right to it, terra.

Healthy habits are certainly one of the top considerations for parents as we begin the back to school year.

And, do you have any tips or any helps actually that can help make it a little bit easier for everyone?

Terra wellingto...: yes.

And i'm here on behalf of several companies that i'll talk about today.

And one of the first tips is to make sure everyone's getting regular sleep.

This can help to de- stress.

It can give you the energy for the next day.

Also, you want to make sure that you and your children are getting enough exercise.

This is really important for kids, because you want to check and see if they need that exercise to replace what they're not getting at school with pe and recess.

I also keep up with simple oral health.

This will be your brushing and flossing, and sometimes kids need a little extra motivation with that.

So i love how one of the leading, natural toothpaste, tom's of maine, has a great tasting kid's toothpaste called silly strawberry.

And this can make brushing fu real fruit flavor that kidslove% naturally derived ingredients.

The tubis recyclable, which is actuallavailable in fluoride and fluoride free, with no artificial , or preservatives.

Lyssa hicertainla get to get my kids to brush their teeth, that's for sure.

So hopefully that will help.

What about nutrition?

It certainly can be easy to be snacking a lot when everyone is home more.

So what suggestions do you have there?

Terra wellingto...: yeah, so that's true.

So at my household, what i tried to do is purchase more high nutrition snacks to help with that.

For toddlers, though this can be a challenge, for parents because sometimes those toddlers are really picky eaters.

And so, the first three years of a child's life are really crucial because poor nutrition can have lasting effects, especially if your little one is not getting all the vitamins and nutrients that he or she needs.

Like iron, or dha for brain development, or vitamin d for bone growth.

And in fact, studies found that children who were iron insufficient during their first year exhibited cognitive and socioemotional developmental impairments by the age of five.

So one thing that you can do for toddlers ages, one to three, is close that nutritional gap with something like enfagrow.

And this is a toddler nutritional drink that provides brain building dha, your iron, your vitamins, and prebiotics that supports growth with as much iron as two gallons of milk.

And it's easy to use and it helps give parents peace of mind.

Lyssa high: nice.

I love it.

This school year students will be spending more time than ever in front of screens, as you know, and digital devices.

Do you have any wellness tips for all of that screen time?

It can't be healthy.

Terra wellingto...: right.

So the american academy of child and adolescent psychiatry says that our screen time definitely has increased because of covid.

And so parents are encouraged to have their children do non-screen activities.

So bump up those household chores, do a traditional book reading, go outdoors.

But for that screen time, you can protect your child's eyes with blue light blocking glasses, because studies show that the blue light that comes from screens can affect your sleep.

It can give you a dry eye, it can give you headaches.

So zenni has some great solutions for this.

These are frames that start at 6.95, even for toddlers.

And it includes blue light blocking glasses called blokz, that can be added to any lens to help absorb the blue light.

And the trivex feature makes glasses impact resistant, which is really great for our kids.

Lyssa high: i love it.

And where can people go for more even for toddlers.

Lyssa high: i love it.

And where can people go for more information?

Terra wellingto...: you can go to simplemomsguide.c om and i have links to everything there that i talked about, as well as an article and how you can have a school garden at home.

Lyssa high: wonderful.
