9-Month-Old Baby Dies After Being Shot in Evansville

A 9-month-old child has died after being shot in the 3900 block of Vista Drive in Evansville on Friday.

Developing tonight --- a devastating scene unfolding in evansville.

A 9-month-old baby -- shot and killed -- in an apartment -- on the north-side.

Police are determined to get to the bottom of the situation.

As 44news reporter erran huber explains -- there are still so many unknowns -- in this shocking tragedy.

"this has given me a new perspective.

'do i need to start protecting myself in some certain way.'

This has never really happened, and my family has been here for over 40 years, so we couldn't imagine anything like this ever happening."

Kenzee koconis was visiting her grandmother at buena vista apartments--like she does regularly.

She didn't know anything was amiss--until she heard a commotion just after 2:30.

"i heard sirens, i came outside, and there were cop cars everywhere.

It was a very scary experience, because i did not know what was going on at the time."

First responders racing to the scene-- disturbed--to find a baby girl just months old-- shot in the back of the head.

"a lot of officers are very upset, got a lot of officers that have children, grandchildren.

People are upset, people are angry obviously."

The little girl-- rushed to the emergency room.

But died within less than an hour of the devastating incident.

Tonight-- evansville police are questioning a man -- one of two people -- who were inside the apartment -- at the time.

Trying to piece together what happened--as friends, families, and neighbors wait --stunned by the tragic day.

"it's a traumatic experience.

I can't imagine what the family is going through."

An autopsy for the little girl is set for 10 am saturday.
