Man Arrested In Connection With Infant Death

Developing news out of evansville-- a 9-month-old baby -- shot and killed -- in an apartment -- on the north-side friday.... police*now say a man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of the child... 44news reporter jake thomas joining us with the latest developments tonight.

The vanderburgh county coroner have now ruled -- the baby girl's death a homicide.

The victim --- is iowa meriweather -- of henderson kentucky -- and tonight - police confirm --- her father has been charged in connection to the incident.

On friday-- shortly before three in the afternoon--- evansville police were called to the 39-hundred block of vista drive -- for a baby who had been shot.

Police say --- when they arrived at the apartment --- they found 9- month-old- iowa meriweather with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

She was rushed to the hospital -- but died -- less than an hour after the tragic incident.

Once officers arrived, they found the 9-month-old infant that was shot in the base of its neck .

We know of two people, two adults, that were in the house when this occurred."

One of those two men in the home at the time of the accident has been arrested.

Epd says the infant father, 20-year-old, anthony lamont meriweather was arrested overnight and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

They believe the father accidentally discharged the handgun -- fatally wounding -- little iowa.?it was a big shock.

I couldn believe it, especially a baby.

The shocking incident has rocked -- the surrounding community.

Neighbors throughout the buena vista apartment complex -- where it happened -- are praying for iowa's mother.?i cannot imagine the pain.

Ie gone through a lot in my life that is bad, but it nothing like what she going through, and i truly sorry, and if she ever needs anything, if i can help, i will help her?

Jake meriweather is currently being held at the vanderburgh county corrections center on a $50,000 bond.
