Some Chico State students staying in town, despite university changes

Despite the recent changes at Chico State University, not all students are heading home just yet.

How about for students who decided to stay in town?

As action news now reporter kristian lopez shows us - despite the recent changes at the university - not all students are heading home just yet.

Kristian: this is what the campus looks like at chico state, you can see it's empty and quiet.

But i did speak with two students who say they still plan on staying in chico even though the university switched to online only.

Rachel bennett/staying in chico: i'm staying in chico because i have a lease at the moment that i can't get out of.

Rachel bennett is from sacramento won't be able to head back home just yet - and she's not the only one.

Baylie hammitt/staying in chico: a lot of my friends are staying the same reason i am, just leases, if we are paying we might as well be here.

Rachel bennett/staying in chico: if it wasn't for the lease i probably would have left.

Bennett and hammit both say this is not how they envisioned their last year of college.... rachel bennett/staying in chico: the college experience it's not the same being online because you can't do much or go out because of covid.

Baylie hammitt/staying in chico: we can't really do anything my other three years are completely different than this year.

So it's a lot different.

The recent covid-19 outbreak at the university - also has them concerned.

Baylie hammitt/staying in chico: i was hoping that we'd be able to get it together and come back.

For now - students will have to continue adjusting to online learning as they await what comes next.

Kristian: reporting in chico kl action news now coverage you can count on.
