Labor Day During The Coronavirus Pandemic

WAAY 31's Breken Terry reports from the Shoals on whether people followed doctor's advice to heed social distancing during the holiday weekend.

Sherman has the night off.

For more than a week - doctors and mayors warned everyone to stay on guard, be safe and not to break social distance guidelines or masking rules this holiday weekend.

We saw big jumps in coronavirus cases after the memorial day and july fourth holidays - and they don't want to see the same thing after labor day.

Waay31's breken terry is live at mcfarland park in florence after spending the day checking whether people followed the advice.

I've been here at mcfarland park a few times throughout the day and this isn't as packed as the park can get on a normal holiday weekend.

I did speak with one family who came here but kept their distance from others because of the virus.

William- i goed to the beach and played.

That's four year old william.

He just got out of the water after swimming at mcfarland parks beach area.

Cowley- he's having a blast.

Cowley- no i don't think this is busy.

Williams grandfather michael cowley told me they only planed on staying about an hour.

Cowley said for the most part everyone at the park is staying away from people not in their group but masks are missing.

Cowley- when i'm outside i don't wear masks out here.

People don't have to wear masks if they are outside and socially distanced from others, swimming, or doing physical activies.

Cowley said being outside but distanced from people who aren't wearing masks doesn't bother him.

Cowley- if your in line at like a fast food place and they aren't wearing masks.

That bothers me.

I wear a mask.

Public health officials told me it will take 1-2 weeks to know if the state expierences another ourbreak from holiday gatherings.

Live in flo bt waay31.
