The Family Resource Center canceled its food giveaway Wednesday.

Wednesday we tell you about the food giveaway in lee county.

A food giveaway that provided help to thousands of families in lee county and the surrounding areas during the pandemic.

But today, the family resource center and its partner mid- south food bank canceled its food giveaway.

Wtva's chelsea brown is live in tupelo to tell us why workers there don't have anything to give those in need.

I-m here at the tupelo furniture market, the parking lot is typically packed with people waiting on food boxes from the family resource center.

I spoke with the executive director she says workers recieved many calls and texts asking why the food giveaway is not happening.

She told me mid south food bank is out of food... executive director, family resource center ) christi webb- executive director "these people that line up for this food are hungry, they need food."

Christi webb says typically workers at the family resource center give away 1500 boxes of food.

Many cars waited for hours to pick up food and workers had to turn some folks away when the resource center ran out.

"had 200 cars at least that last week that did not get boxes because we were out of food."

Webb says telling families they ran out of food is the hardest part.

When webb heard the news mid south food bank was out of food,she and her staff were heartbroken.

"well we were all just sad, we had some staff that were inside crying ."

Webb said they have a small food pantry at the resources center for any families in crisis and need food.

She also says the resource center will take any donated food.

"we are a resource center and we will find food for that family."

Webb says the resource center should hear tomorrow if there will be any more funding for the food boxes.
