Hormel donates $10M+

The Salvation Army will put the grant to good use

I'm at the salvation army in austin and they are just one of many groups that will be receiving grants from the hormel foundation.

I was told that this money will go towards purchasing items like soups, bread and cereal that will be distributed to the austin community.

Right now many people are relying on the salvation to help with food and shelter .

Against that backdrop, the salvation army itself is struggling.

Salvation army: "this has kept us in businness.each location is pressured is supposed to raise funds to be self sustaining and we are all pressured by doing that."

Major jeff strickler says this money will be put to great use.

Salvation army: "it's been an extra challenging year with the pandemic our food programs have really skyrocketed we've been helping people with food shelfs.

We would usually serve 250 to 300 a month and we have been serving over 500 the last few months."

The city of austin is also receiving one of the hormel grants.

Tom dankert with the city says the money will be distributed to six departments.

"the city of austin was fortunate enough to recieve grants from the hormel foundation for several projects within the community.

The nature center is going to recieve funding to maintain their educational programs. the austin public library will be able to give out hot spots data plans basically.

In addition to that shirly field park has drainage issues theres a soccer field over there and the water just doesnt drain very well the way this grant works is that paper all told, more than a dozen groups in austin recieved grants from the hormel foundation.
