In more fort wayne news-- a police reform commission born out of last summer's george floyd protests presented its findings to the city.fox 55's drew frey tells us how community leaders hope their recommendations can help foster trust between police and the community.

Trust isn't earned overnight, but the commission on police reform and racial justice hopes its action plan can help bring together the fort wayne community and its police department.commision co-chair michelle chambers gave mayor tom henry the report this morning.chambers: we have to trust our police force, and right now, the community based on the results of may 25, 2020 when george floyd was murdered by a police officer, that tainted the trust for some people.standup: the commission's final report features 40 recommendations, which focus on race relations, communication and transparency from the fw police department.

These recommendations include recruiting more diverse police officers, reviewing the department's whistleblower policy, and focusing more on community outreach.co-chair joe jordan hopes to connect officers with local youth as well.jordan: there's two goals i have with that.

One is to make sure that police understand that our kids are kids.

They're like any other kids.

Two: i want our kids to understand that the police, there's a human being behind that uniform.jordan says those officers have been helpful and open to evaluation so far.

Jordan: it was just a great learning experience first, and then also just the engagement of the fort wayne pd and mayor henry has been totally transparent, and they want the best for our community.

Chambers thinks these 40 suggestions are what's best for the city of fort wayne.

Chambers: we believe the recommendations will help the police department look inward and really build on community relationship, community response, building a police force that is reflective of the community that they are serving.fort wayne police have 45 days to report back to the commission.
