Starting to get in the feild.

That's because the spring 20-21 platning season is underway.

For today's indiana farm report we're talking about how to have a safe planting season.

Part of having a safe planting season means getting to (and from your destination safely.

Fred whitford is the director of purdue's pesticide program.

He writes publications about agriculture safety for purdue extension.

Whitford says heavy farm equipment sharing the road with fast, impatient drivers is (not a good combination.

He wants drivers to remain patient and practice safe driving, while being respectful of large farm equipment.

"it's like in a construction zone, you know you should slow down.

What i'm asking people is in fact to slow down for these men and women who are trying to earn a living."

As for the farmers, whitford says they a lot of transportation regulations they have to follow.

One of the regulations is to have popper working hazard lights on their equipment.

As well as the "slow moving signs" placed on their equipment where drivers can see them.

"make sure you have slow moving signs on the back on your vehicles because lots of farmers will have them, but maybe they're on the tractor and it's blocked by another piece of equipment, so i want that last piece of equipment to have a slow moving sign" for the 20-21 planting season, whitford would like to remind farmers to know their limits and to take a break when necessary.

He knows that's easier said than done, but he encourages farmers to (not push their limits on what they can physically and mentally do.

As well as what their equipment can do.
