Stock market today: Asian shares are mixed as Chinese shares resume their upward climb

Asian shares are mixed after Japan reported its exports jumped nearly 10% in December over a year earlier. But shares in Tokyo fell, capping a recent strong rally, as speculation revived over a shift away from longstanding lax monetary policy by the Bank of Japan. Hong Kong jumped 2%, while Shanghai surged 1.8%. U.S. futures and oil prices edged higher. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 climbed 0.3% to another record as the earnings reporting season for big U.S. companies picked up pace. The Nasdaq composite gained 0.4%, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3% a day after topping 38,000 for the first time.
