(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Joining millions of people and companies around the globe, Qatari residents and institutions are set to observe Earth Hour, a global initiative to spread awareness about environment protection and climate change, tonight. Almost all government and private institutions and companies including ministries, malls, hotels, offices as well as individuals will observe the event by switching off the lights of the buildings, houses for an hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. 'As part of the Qatar International Environmental Exhibition 2021, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment invites you to switch off unnecessary lights and electronic equipment 8.30pm - 9.30pm on Saturday March 27 in celebration of #EarthHour, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment said in a tweet. Kahramaa also posted a motion graphic with slogan 'Disconnect to Reconnect on its Twitter handle to encourage people to mark Earth Hour. Qatar Calendar, in a tweet, said: 'A better future is in our hands. Let's take a step towards this future by turning off our lights for Earth Hour on March 27 at 8:30 pm. Doha Festival City has also announced that on March 27, it will pay tribute to Earth Hour by decreasing its electricity consumption between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. The Mall will dim both Chandelier Lights in its Luxury Area, and alternate switching lights on and off in the Center Court, to cut consumption by 50 percent. The Mall will also promote for electricity preservation among visitors by spreading awareness and sustainability messages all around the mall on its digital screens. Today there will be firstever Earth Hour ‘Virtual Spotlight' also. 'Over the years, the lights-off moment saw entire streets, buildings, landmarks, and city skylines go dark - an unmissable sight that drew public attention to nature loss and the climate crisis.
