*HOUSTON, TX / ACCESSWIRE / January 15, 2024 / *Space weather poses a constant threat to our planet's infrastructure, our satellites, and our astronauts. As we approach the height of the latest solar cycle, NASA awarded the Atlanta-based tech startup, Dauntless XR, a contract to further develop their proprietary spatial computing platform, Aura. Aura ingests and displays satellite sensor data in mixed reality to help space operators on Earth monitor and forecast the sun's activity.

Extreme solar weather events like flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar energetic particles (SEPs) can erupt from the sun with little warning. SEPs reach Earth in an hour or less and are extremely hazardous to astronauts and spacecraft. CMEs take one to three days to reach Earth and can cause blackouts, disrupt aircraft systems, interrupt radio communication, destroy satellites, expose astronauts to dangerous levels of radiation, and produce auroras like the northern lights. As such, a robust space-weather program is essential for future space exploration, growing the space economy, and protecting humans on Earth and in space.

Dauntless XR, whose executive team includes alumni from Fortune 100, aerospace giants and engineering firms behind the world's biggest infrastructure builds, is no stranger to ambitious projects. "We are in an incredibly interesting stage of space exploration, between record-breaking numbers of satellite launches, missions to the moon and Mars, and even returning asteroid samples to Earth," said Lori-Lee Elliott, Dauntless XR co-founder and CEO. "With space weather, we are presented with an opportunity to make incredibly complex data easily accessible and provide a platform for innovation - and collaboration - for the space economy and space exploration". The Aura application will first be available on the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest devices.

The Dauntless team consulted Space Weather experts during initial development and will continue engaging with the Space Weather community as the technology moves forward.
