to the streets. and speaking of fat tuesday... we all know green, purple, and gold symbolizes the mardi gras celebration, including the carnival. but there is also the traditional mardi gras king's cake that's eaten during the celebration. krcr news channel 7's sade browne went to a local bakery known to make the special cakes. good evening sade... good evening brent and allison. until today, i had never heard of the traditional kings cake .. so to get a better understanding , i went to great harvest in redding, known to be one of the only bakeries who make the special mardi gras cakes. nats...machine rolling out the dough...literally... for the mardi gras kings cake- famously known traditional dessert for mardi gras revelers- a cinnamon swirl cake with a surprise treat inside. from new orleans to redding, a local bakery shop, great harvest bread company- took on the tradition of making the cakes 7 years ago and still continues to make them.
"this is probably the closest place on the west coast to be able to find one. as a matter of fact we had request to ship the all over the state of california." eric heinrich works at great harvest. i asked him: what is the traditional kings cake?
"it started in old europe and what's so special about a king cake.. what it is is kind of a mixture of a coffee cake and french pastery and what's unique about it was that a little baby jesus baked into the king cake." heinrich says they do tell people ahead of time that there is a plastic toy baby inside the cake- just in case. to see how one makes a special kings cake, co-owner of great harvest gus burgoyne walked me through the process. nats ..him explaining the process... and the finishing touches are the traditional green, purple and gold. green smybolizing faith, purple for justice and gold for power. burgoyne says who ever finds the baby jesus in the cake...
"the person that gets that piece with the baby figurine in it is desginated king of the party and then they are obligated by tradition to host the next king cake party." great harvest let me take a cake back to the newsroom.. and i will say, i've now had my first official kings cake in honor of the mardi gras celebration and it's delicious. sade
