Rosa Elvira Hernandez says her brother Carlos was happy when he left the Guatemalan town of San Jose El Rodeo.

He was happy, she says, because he was going to the United States.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SISTER OF GUATEMALAN BOY WHO DIED IN U.S. CUSTODY, ROSA ELVIRA HERNANDEZ VAZQUEZ, SAYING: "Because he had a dream and the yearning to go to the United States to work, to give my parents a better life and especially to my little brother, too, who is special." But that dream was cut short.

Carlos died in Texas on Monday in U.S. Border Patrol custody, becoming the fifth Guatemalan minor to die after being apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border since December.

It's the latest tragedy in a record surge of asylum seekers that has overwhelmed U.S. authorities.

After being diagnosed with the flu on Sunday, Carlos had been taken to the U.S. border station in Weslaco and was found unresponsive Monday morning.

Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan told lawmakers on Thursday an investigation is underway.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) KEVIN MCALEENAN, ACTING DHS SECRETARY, SAYING: "He was both screened and offered medical care and we're going to look forward to the findings of the inspector general to see if we can do better." The number of migrant children who have died in U.S. custody rose to a total of SIX this week.

Officials revealed a 10-year-old girl from El Salvador passed away last September, but the death was publicly known until Wednesday.
