Family Literacy Program Impacting Community

Tucked away within the halls of truman early childhood education center is one of lafayette parish schoo's best kept secrets.

'm going to pass it over to alex... she got an inside look at this pretty remarkable program.

Well carter, i's a family literacy program best known as fran... it started out in a traveling van... ultimately connecting parents and their children through education.

Today, fran is much more than a program, i's a community... one that continues to impact families throughout lafayette parish.

Fran stands for families reading around neighborhoods..but those wh've experienced the program know..that fran represents so much more.i dropped out of high school and i did't think i would of turned back but i did.'m doing everything i ever dreamed of because of this program.this program is awesome.

I's awesome.

And more than a program i's a family.a true family literacy program, director shelley fuselier says fran is based off four components.the first one is adult education so our students are here to work on their highset.jackie ware meets with parents at least four days a week in order to help students like jazzlynn cormier achieve her high school diploma.you know we lose students, students come and go, maybe they have issues in their livesi was pregnant and kind of quit.but w've had them back.

Because like i say, once apart of the fran family yo're always apart of the fran family.the second component of fran is the early ed program.

I's what makes fran special according to fuselier.their children are allowed to come with them and they are educated also.they teach them basically pre-k stuff, like colors, activities.

Dana guillory heads the early ed program...i usually read a story, i do a theme based art activity, cooking, science experiments, something of that order.the third component of fran focuses on parent education while the 4th is geared toward parents and children together.seeing their kids learn things and their mo's engage with the kids in a positive manner..you think wow i made a difference.

Guillory is one of many within the fran family who feels this way.you see the aftermath,the're going off, the're going to college, the're studying, the're going to college...thats the joy of the work that i do.

Whether yo're in search of a second chance, acceptance, or of course..family...yo'll find it within fran.if there is any mother out there needing to get their education, this is the program..its not only for you it helps with your kids.come to this program.

We will make it work for you..youll end up with what you need to provide a better life for your family.

This is it, this is the program.

Ive been to multiple different schools and none of them ever fit.

This one is perfect.

It perfect.

Since the start of fran... the program has had close to 170 graduates.

'd also like to point out that... all of the mothers you just saw either graduated..

Or are on track to graduate this year.
