>> dan shaffer: welcome back.

Thanks for joining us.

Every night at waay 31 news a at 6:00, dr. ali hassoun joins us again from huntsville hospital.

It seems like every day there's another new symptom of the virus in kids and there are warning about kawasaki disease in children.

Do you know why that is?

>> dr. hassoun: so, you know, kawasaki disease and those atypical kawasaki as well has been correlated over many years with viral illnesses.

Including different viruses.

So i can tell you it's not a surprise to see covid can correlate with that.

Of course the reported cases from new york and there are some from europe as well, these usually get to be where they'll have inflammation in their conconjunctiva, beefy tongue, as well they might affect their heart in addition.

We call it inflammation and their heart.

>> dan shaffer: what can you tell us about -- what can you tell us about kids showing symptoms of this supposed covid toes symptoms and is the research into why it's having such an impact on kids?

>> dr. hassoun: so it's very preliminary information.

But they think what the virus and inflammation in the vessel as well as what we call small clots or microthrombi into the vessel causing these changes.

Again, these phenomena has been correlate with other viruses but now they seeing it, which is interesting, you know, in new york been going through this for a while and now they seeing it.

So it's like an after-effect rather than it's a virus itself.

>> dan shaffer: so what should parents do?

What do they need to look for?

>> dr. hassoun: what i would say definitely if any of the kids double up -- what we call purple, discoloration, or redness, patchy nature and their toes, have fever, you know, red eyes, mouth ulceration, they need to get in touch with their, you know, pediatrician to talk with them about these symptoms. there's really no specific treatment for the virus, but it's treatment for the kawasaki or such or these phenomena, steroid and others.

>> dan shaffer: dr. ali hassoun, thank you for your
