The victory gave Norwegian Carlsen a 1-0 lead over American speed player Nakamura in the multi-day best of three format being used for the semis of the event.

The other semi-final saw Russian Daniil Dubov down China's Ding Liren 2.5 to 1.5 in a more competitive affair to grab a 1-0 opening day lead.

Both Carlsen and Dubov can advance to the final with match victories Friday (May 29) while Nakamura and Ding will need wins to force a decisive third day of semi-final play.
