WAAY 31's Sydney Martin was live in Madison County where learned from local law enforcement about how they prepare for protests here.

Case in the last half hour.

The mayor of minneapolis imposed a curfew as protests continue.

It starts at 8 p-m tonight.

It will be in effect saturday as well.

The mayor of neighboring saint paul, minnesota put a similar measure in place.

And - the family of george floyd said they're upset the officer charged with his murder isn't facing a more serious offense.

Thanks for joining us - i'm najahe sherman.

And i'm dan shaffer.

Waay 31's sydney martin is live in madison county tonight.

She is working to learn from local law enforcement about how they prepare for potentially destructive protests - like the ones sparked by the video that shows floyd restrained by an officer for about 7 minutes.

Dan, najahe- the huntsville madison county fraternal order of police president- donny shaw- told me today what's seen in that video from minneapolis is not what law enforcement officer are supposed to do- and he hopes any protests here remain peaceful.

Donny shaw, huntsville/madis on county fraternal order of police president"he has discredited law enforcement.

He and the other officers who were involved with him have vacated their oath of office.

They vacated the law enforcement code of ethics and they vacated the basic decency of human rights."

Donny shaw- worked for the madison county sheriff's office for about 30 years before retiring last year.

He told me seeing what happened in minneapolis was disheartening.

Shaw taught defensive tactics for many years..

And said an officer restraining george floyd by putting a knee to the neck is a technique that should never be used by an officer.

Donny shaw, huntsville/madis on county fraternal order of police president "anything that applies pressure to the trachea or to the windpipe is not taught in alabama, is not taught locally.

That position you see in photos and in the video is not anything that should be taught at any law enforcement agency.

During his career, shaw said local law enforcement have monitored many peaceful protests or demonstrations in the area he said he believes success in keeping the peace here comes with the practice agencies use..

Donny shaw, huntsville/madis on county fraternal order of police president"each agency has a team that is specially equipped and specially trained to respond to protests and manage the protests and mitigate any violence and possible damage to property."

Shaw told me those teams train regularly on how to respond and mitigate any violence.

Donny shaw, huntsville/madis on county fraternal order of police president"that voice needs to be heard.

It can be heard in a peaceful manner.

And frankly, law enfrocement is there to support you.

In having your voice and your concerns on what is going on across the nation."

Tonight- i've requested a statement from huntsville police and the sheriff's office in regards to the video and the protests going on across the nation.

I'm still waiting to hear back.
