Vigil for George Floyd held in Belfast as solidarity spreads worldwide

A vigil for George Floyd was held in Belfast, Northern Ireland yesterday (May 31).

The act of solidarity in Writer's Square was organised by the left-wing organisation Connolly Youth Movement.

The socially distanced crowd can be heard chanting: "No justice, no peace!" The filmer told Newsflare: "Its important for international citizens, not just in Belfast but around the world, to show our firm solidarity to George Floyd's family as well as the thousands of family members of the victims of police violence and racist injustice in the US.

"I felt very obliged to come and pay my respects to George Floyd and his family.

"It was a brutal murder by US police, but it's far from the first of its kind and if systemic changes are not made in the US now, it will tragically not be the last.

"I'm not surprised, the people of Northern Ireland are strong and know what suffering is like so it's easy to see why so many want to show support to those suffering right now across the water."
