Chico city council discusses future budget

Chico city council approved its preliminary budget as the coronavirus continues impacting economies' worldwide

Right across from where the protest happened in downtown- chico city council is meeting right now.

The biggest item on the agenda - the budget, which faces a mult-million dollar shortfall due to the economic impacts from the coronavirus shut-down.

That budget did pass tongiht.

"i think every municipality "i think every municipality throughout the entire nation is "i think every municipality throughout the entire nation is dealing with this right now.

And being a community that, really, as its core as a university, it makes it even more dynamic.

With the potential closure of the university.

So the city's really had to take a tact of working closely with our business community to really understand the dynamics of what they're seeing, financially.

Because that obviously impacts our sales tax generation which is the largest percentage of our general fund revenue."

Also tonight, mayor ann schwab asked chico city council to agendize a discussion on establishing a committee specifically to review police policies, training, and implementation... in the wake of the george floyd death in minneapolis.

The goal of this is to report the committees findings and recommendations to reform where necessary... so let's dive in to what those policies and training methods entail: de-escalation of situations.

The purpose of this would be to help reduce the use of force where possible... officer maneuvers/field practices.

The necessity of using chokeholds and restraints that cut off blood or oxygen flow.

Governor newsom called for an end of the use of carotid restraints late last week... field practices like officers shooting at moving vehicles as well of the use of different weapons and types of force... officer accountability.

Schwab wants to discuss the process officers go through when ultimately using deadly force as well what happens after an officer exercises use of force... ann brandon ccycco.
