Chico Unified School District plans for reopening in the fall

The California Department of Education released a 62-page guideline on how school districts should welcome back students, now the Chico Unified School District is trying to figure out how to meet those guidelines.

School will be very different come fall..

Tell your kids to expect temperature checks... extensive hand washing... and physical distancing in classes, hallways, at recess and on school buses - plus face coverings except when eating and drinking.

One of the recommended safety steps -- is to keep kids away from each other... action news now's christina vitale is live in chico -- christina -- how will the district enforce social distancing with kids?

From the kindergraten level to a senior in high school -- the assistant superintendent tells me they'll be working hard to get students to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart.

Jay marchant says the staff will be preparing to meet these guidelines.

Right now they're trying to figure out when students will wear masks throughout the 6 hour school day?

Will it only be when you're within 6 feet of someone?

During recess?

Walking in the halls?

Marchant says school is a home away from home and worries about the emotional toll wearing masks could have on children.

Itll be a lot of just like first day of school this is how you line up this is where you put your mask on this is our 6 foot markers rememeber there is a hand sanitizer or a sink you can wahs your hands in all of this will be repetitive that our students arent used to doing in schools...it doesnt really bother me that much im just grateful to be able to go back to school itll probbaly just be weird to transition into that... that would be probably weird because its really hot when youre wearing it... its going to be weird to not be able to high five my friends and stuff marchant says he's concerned about communication between teachers and students with masks.

He told action news now they're looking at buying mics with a speaker so its easier for students to hear.

Marchant says a local mask making company offered to provide masks for the district.
