In light of the protests against police brutality city officials have reportedly received almost 2,000 emails regarding law enforcement reforms. The city council is addressing those reforms including requests to defund the Bakersfield Police Department.

POLICE BRUTALITY -- CITYOFFICIALS HAVE REPORTEDLYRECEIVED ALMOST 2,000 EMAILS --REGARDING LAW ENFORCEMENTREFORMS.THE CITY COUNCIL IS ADDRESSINGTHOSE REFORMS -- INCLUDINGREQUESTS TO DEFUND THEBAKERSFIELD POLICEDEPARTMENT.THE MESSAGES WERE SUBMITTED ASPART OF THE PUBLIC COMMENTPORTION OF YESTERDAY'S CITYCOUNCIL MEETING.THE VOLUME OF MESSAGES IS FARHIGHER THAN THE NORMAL PUBLICRESPONSE RATE FOR ANY GIVENTOPIC.COUNCILMAN ANDRAE GONZALES MADESEVERALRECOMMENDATIONS THAT RELATED TOCONCERNS BROUGHT UP INTHE EMAILS.GONZALES RECOMMENDED THE CITYMANAGER ANDPOLICE CHIEF LOOK OVER THE"8-CANT-WAIT" POLICYPROPOSALS DESIGNED TO REDUCEPOLICE VIOLENCE.HE ALSO SUGGESTED THE CITYDEVELOP A SIX-MONTH TASKFORCE MADE UP OF COMMUNITYMEMBERS TO EVALUATE B-P-DPRACTICES -- AS WELL AS NEWPOLICY PROPOSALS FROMTHE COMMUNITY.AND..

IN A COMMUNITY PANEL WITHKCSO -- SHERIFF DONNYYOUNGBLOOD ANNOUNCED THAT AS OFYESTERDAY HE IS SUSPENDINGTHE CAROTID CONTROL HOLD.DURING THE PANEL -- COMMUNITYMEMBERS ANDLOCAL AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSTALKED ABOUT THEIRGOAL TO INCREASE TRUST BETWEENLAW ENFORCEMENTAND THE BLACK COMMUNITY.THE SHERIFF ADDRESSED THE LOWNUMBER OF AFRICANAMERICANS WORKING FOR THESHERIFF'S OFFICE.
