Systemic Racism in the criminal justice system
We take a closer look at what systemic racism is in our culture.

Passed./// the death of george floyd at the hands of minneapolis police is shedding light on the racial disparities across the nation.

But just how deep do the roots of racism run?

Well... it goes back to a concept you hear all the time: systemic racism.

Kimt news three's isabella basco joins us live with what it means and how prevalent it is.

Xxx katie ?

"* in simplistic terms..

Systemic racism defines the social and political institutions that make it difficult for people of color to succeed when it comes to education... gaining financial stability or employment.

It's an issue that goes much deeper that what i'll cover right now... but i talked to two experts who explained how it's alive in our criminal justice system.

Xxx donavan bailey works for the minnesota public defender's office and sees first hand how the criminal justice system is unfair to people of color.

"african?

"* americans, laotian hispanics, what have you.

When you go north, a lot of native americans comparatively.

I see it every day because they are disproportiona tely arrested."

There's data to back that up.

The naacp reports african americans and hispanics make up 56 percent of all incarcerated people in the u?

*- s.

Keep in mind... people of those races make up a little less than a third of the u?

"* s population.

Why has the system not changed?

Diversity council executive director dee sabol explains some reasons behind that.

"the criminal justice system wasn't set up to benefit anyone other than kind of the status quo, the euro american centricity because that's who we were protecting at the time the system was developed."

Sabol says our country needs to change these deeply rooted systems. "we haven't made any adjustments to it ?

"* we have not corrected for ?

"* the misconception s, te processes, the policies that were put in place."

Bailey points to the killing of another black man killed at the hands of police ?

"* as an example of how our institutions fail people of color.

"guess what?

2016 ?

"* philando castile murdered as well.

Somehow that did not click where things are embellished as they are now."

Bailey and sabol both say the key to fixing hundreds of years of racism is simply... admitting it.

"whether it's housing or wealth, it's hard to admit those are racist because we only seen bailey says he wants to implement policies that will turn the tide and is taking it upon himself to run for rochester city countil ward 6.
