City, County Push Back Moving Confederate Monument

Happening now - the florence city council is meeting amid calls to remove the confederate monument outside the courthouse.

Waay 31 learned a vote on removing it will not happen tonight as many hoped.

I am actually outside of the city auditorium - with people who want to see the monument that sits on the courthouse steps removed.

The city isn't allowing many people inside of here in large numbers because of the coronavirus, but people are allowed to go in and speak one at a time.

But - we know the vote to remove the monument isn't on the city's agenda.

The city owns the confederate monument - but it's located on county-owned land.

So - the city said it won't move it until county commissioners pass a resolution saying the city is allowed to do so.

The city also wants the county to include in the resolution that it's not liable for any damages during removal.

The county commission gave the city a letter saying this - but the city said that's not good enough and said it wants a formal resolution.

Last night, county commissioners decided not to put the resolution on its agenda to be voted on next week.

Now - the city says it won't act until it gets the resolution.

Activist who want the monument moved tell me their frustrated.

During previous city council meeting - counter protesters have shown up.

It's not clear if any plan to do so tonight.
