How people are feeling about the Mask Mandate

A statewide mask mandate went into effect for louisiana early this morning.

News 1's cassie schirm is checking to see whether people are following the mandate.... and what they think about the new requirement.

Tha's right with 've already done this about a few months ago to tally just how many people were and were't wearing masks i found about 60% were in grocery stores but this time around the numbers were different because people are told they do't have a choice.

Today we spent hours in the heat counting people going in and out of stores checking how many were or w're not wearing a mask.

From the grocery store to hobby lobby and even the mall and what we found is a lot more people are following the mandate whether they are for masks or not.

"we have trouble breathing yeah w're not for the masks but will do it if we need it will do it""'m actually glad that the governor mandated wearing masks i realize ther's a lot of people that are being careless about it and i's putting at risk the more vulnerable people""i really do't know what to think i wear it because i have to and i ca't breathe in it so 'm always pulling it down or pull it away from my face so 'm not sure how much good it does""i's just very scary i love it that i's been mandated for the protection of everyone.

But are people going to follow the mask mandate?

"i think most people are going to wear it but i's always gonna be those people tha's gonna be defiant""have you noticed most people are wearing masks today?

Yes yes and when we went to church yesterday it was the same thing.

""i did't see one person without a mask everybody had them.""do you think a lot of kids your age yo're gonna wanna wear a mask?

No especially with school and stuff but you just have to do."today out of 150 people walking into those three businesses we saw only 20 people not wearing masks.

But did notice stores were seeing less people than usual."would you say a mask would stop you from going into a store?

No no i mean you still need to go places.do you think i's gonna stop other people from going in business?

Possibly yes and even the restiraunts today saw a differnce during their normal busy times, "i's definitely slow w've had about 15 tables in the restaurant this morning normally i's triple that."

At la carretas in downtown they have a multiple signs on their doors telling customers masks are required.

"in order to stay open you know the whole mandate mask thing everybody hast to wear them unfortunately luckily but once yo're in a booth inside you can take them off and enjoy your meal."so now the businesses, restaurants and their enplyees are hoping people will understand and still show up to shop and eat.

"we have to do what we have to do we have to come together for something like this you know we are a community we are family we see each other every day i's lafayette so if now is the time we have to do it."

Now each store was different with how they check masks.

Some like albertsons here have a lot people going in and out all day and they have a person at the front with a sign asking you to mask while others i did't see any employees checking.

Face mask exceptions have been enforced and governor edwards says i's important that we follow the rules to overcome this pandemic..
