Motor-scooters could help combat a campus wide issue at purdue.

Student transportation has been a rising concern for university leaders during this pandemic.

News 18's micah upshaw joins us live on campus to tell us why.

The university has had to make a number of changes including the way it operates transportation.

This is to accommodate statewide social distancing rules.

That's why leaders are looking at these scooters as a way to help students easily get across campus.

Mos: they are quick and effective means of getting around campus.

Sanitary reasons, i just don't think that i'd want to use a vehicle that everyone else is using too.

I still have quiet a long walk until my classes so it would definitely be a viable option if the availability was there.

M: whether students use them or not..

Nat m: spin scooters are back on campus.

E: this week you will start to see a few scooters returning to purdue university's campus, and that's spin scooters.

M: erin easter, the city of west lafayette's director of development says they didn't plan on brining scooters back this semester.

But the university requested it after undergoing a numbers of changes with its transportation options.

E: there are fewer transportation opportunities and limited transportation opportunities for safety reasons.

M: buses taking students campus are seating fewer riders to follow social- distancing rules.

In addition to that -- the university's only bike sharing company zagster ended its operations earlier this summer.

Easter sees these scooters a positive if users follow the procedures.

E: we are really happy about both purdue and spin's participation in making sure that we have really sound sanitation -- sanitizing practices.

M: this includes signage on the scooter requiring users to wear a face mask.

The city is also hoping riders consider wiping down the handles before use.

E: being able to utilize this as a transportation option is something that purdue felt very strongly about and we're happy to support.

Erin easter says the scooters will stay on campus for now.

As they continue monitoring use and the pandemic, they may look into bringing in more scooters for outside campus riders.
