A fort wayne man shot early this morning is the 33rd person killed in allen county so far this year.that's more than double this time last year.fox 55's brianna dahlquist tells us why officials believe we've seen an increase despite the pandemic.

"these homicides are just happening all over."fort wayne police responding to gunshots early this morning found the body of 25-year-old man here on ridgewood drive.the allen county coroner says 25-year-old justin cedrick dawson was shot multiple times.

Dawson is the 33rd person killed in allen county this year that's more than twice as many homicides by the end of august last year it's also more than the 29 total homicides in all of 2019 and that's despite the covid-19 pandemic that slowed down violence for about two months.

Amy davis with java says fort wayne is better than this.

"we've gotta do something, we've got to find a better way because right now we're just reactive.i think as a community we can do better and i know that's what java wants" davis says she's tired of seeing killing after killing and that there needs to be a conversation sooner than later.

"i don't know if we teach that in the school and honestly a lot of the administrators that i've talked to have said that their hands are full."

Fort wayne police sgt sofia rosales- scatena says it starts in the home.

"when they don't have people and mentors to look out for them, when they don't have strong moral fiber...they tend to find something to take the place of that loving family."

Davis says police are doing everything they can.

She now calls on mayor tom henry to address the increase in shootings.

"the major needs to realize that theres a problem in his community because i don't think he realizes that."

Rosales-scatena says you have to protect your family from senseless violence.

"it's really taking your family back and making sure they're on the right path and at the right times."

Davis sends this message to dawson's family or anyone who has lost a loved one too soon.

"java is here for you and want to support you and anyway we can and we hope that you would reach out."
