29 cases of covid 19 from suny oneonta students

The attention of the suny chancellor and the mayor of oneonta this week.

29 students have tested positive for covid 19...the majority live in off campus housing.

The new chancellor of suny schools is sending in personneloelp the schl test every student over the next three days.

Campus personnel will also be tested throughout the semester.

Oneonta mayor gary herzig is concerned.

He says this should serve as a wake up call to both young and old on how easily this virus can spread...and the vital need to restrict social gatherings.

The mayor has now created an 'oneonta control group' to monitor the impact of students returning to oneonta.

The control group will consist of students and staff from both suny oneonta and hartwick, as well as city officials and business owners.

(no cg) this control group will be meeting on a regular basis.

To come up with strategies to monitor how we are doing, make changes if necessary.

Most importantly we want the public to know what is happening we want to be transparent.

So all of these meetings will be live streamed on youtube and recorded so people can watch later.

Also reacting tonight...the president of suny oneonta barbara jean morris.

She says.... "pool testing will give us a more complete picture of the virus in our population and will help contain it.

We are committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of our campus as well as the oneonta community.

This is why we have made testing mandatory for students."
