Now on 44new at ten--- black student unions from kentucky wesleyan college and brescia university -- marching for justice-- this weekend... good evening-- thanks for joining us tonight at ten....i'm megan diventi.... the march is in response to the shooting of jacob blake in kenosha--- wisconsin.... 44news reporter--jake thomas--shares this story from daviess county tonight.

On saturday hundreds of owensboro residents marched up and down frederica street with signs waving in the air and chants flowing through the crowd.

This unity march was put together by the black student unions at brescia and kwc and is in response to all the injustices these students have witnessed recently.?my bsu family, we came together, and i wanted to know if we could do a march, because with everything that been going on in the world, the social injustices, the systematic racism.

I wanted to build a platform for us, and give our school and brescia, as well, a voice?

Speeches were made by brescia and kwc students, and the marches took them from brescia campus, up to owensboro city hall, and then all the way down frederica to kwc campus.

And the protesters had one common message.

Equality.?there should be no way that i should get killed by the police by the color of my skin, and another man, he walks off free after killing two innocent people.

No matter the situation.

Like my brother malcolm said.

Right is right and wrong is wrong."

And a member of the unity march that been outspoken against racial injustice since the civil rights movement spoke about what this march meant to her.?as someone whose lived through the'50s and the'60s, i have seen what the horrors of racism and segregation can do, and i feel a lot of pride for these students, the fact that they have taken on this gauntlet and moved forward.

Pride?

But not all of those in owensboro were in support of today unity march.

Protestors said they experienced hundreds of negative comments online while organizing this event and faced backlash today during their march, and many cars passing by the marchers and shouting words of opposition and heckling.

But hayes wanted to respond to those negative reactions with words of peace and unity.?spread more love, instead of hate.

It takes so much energy to hate someone, but it takes two ounces of positive energy just to show some love?
