In our top story at 11... students in fayette county might not go back to school in person until october.

The school board announcing today it'll take that long to decide whether it's safe to be back in the classroom.

Some parents...who want kids back in class now...rallied this afternoon outside the district's main building.

Abc 36's monica harkins explains why those parents want their kids back in school now.

But these kids need to be in school."

The parents who showed up are just some of the hundreds of an online facebook group called let them learn fayette county.

"angela costa: we see this is something we have to live with what, when do we get back to normal."

Admin of the online group...greg prince helped set up an open letter to the school board...asking for more transparency.

"greg prince: we think our kids need to go back to school...and if they can't we need to know why.

Concrete reasons why."

Happening at the same time as the rally....the school board's regularly scheduled monday night meeting...it says it is listening to the community....and it's hearing both sides.

"school board sound: for our parents and our families we have heard you."

Governor andy beshear recommended schools waited to go back in-person until at least september 28th superintendent manny caulk says on september 28th fayette county's board will still be discussing when to go back...and reviewing more data.

Nat pop and 7-year-old delaney says it's not all about going back to see her friends.

Delaney: i love like to be in person and you know learn things because the computers are really glitchy and stuff."

Angela: "i understand the statistics, i understand the death rate, i understand getting sick.

I know, multiple patients that have gotten sick.

This is not to live in fear.

This is this is the new virus that we have to live with.

And especially our young people cannot suffer."

### a letter home to parents tonight c1 3 from superintendent manny caulk says the district is taking steps to prepare to have kids back in buildings.

He says staff members are putting down floor decals to encourage social distancing...stocki ng schools with cleaning supplies...and moving furniture to create more space.

He also says the board agreed tonight to buy thermal imaging equipment that would be able to detect temperatures in real time.

Caulk reminded parents the district is evaluating whether it's time to go back every month to six weeks...with the first chance to review that decision later this month.

He laid out three possible models the district could use based on infection rates in fayette county.

-traditional school...hybrid instruction with some students in- person and some online...and finally, non-traditional instruction...virtual school district wide or for individual schools.

After announcing new plans today..

For reporting covid-19 when school students test positive for the virus.

The governor..

Says he filed an emergency order today which requires parents and guardians to report to the child's school... within 24 hours..

If their child tests positive for covid-19.

Schools will then report the case, on a new website..

Which will publish that data..

On an online dashboard.

There will also be a color-coded map of covid rates..

Showing schools in green, yellow, orange and red zones.

According to the governor..if a school district reaches red, then..
