KIMT News 3 breaks down how ballots get counted.

Fourth attempt./// as votes continue being counted in several states as part of the presidential race... here in minnesota and iowa... we're moving into a different phase of the election.

Kimt news three's anthony monzon joins us live from the olmsted county elections office with how officials are certifying vote totals.

Anthony?

Katie... george... it may seem like the election process is done and dusted here in minnesota and in iowa... but now election officials are finalizing the numbers.

This process is called canvassing... and it entails officials in each county checking their math by ensuring the calibration of vote machines... and evaluating any ballots that may have been flagged for issues.

Once they've ensured every valid vote has been counted... these officials compile results... and formally certify the election before sending their official results to the secretary of state's office.

I spoke with cerro gordo county auditor adam wedmore today... and he says this entire process is very transparent and should give voters confidence in "iowa has a very good process, lightyears ahead of other states, and the fact that we're able to know the outcome of an election very quickly with a high degree of confidence, so the voters can rest assured that the election was fair and valid."

And wedmore also says he expects elections results for cerro gordo county to be certified next tuesday.

Live in rochester... anthony monzon... kimt news three./// thanks anthony.

Wedmore also says cerro gordo county will keep paper ballots from this election on file for at least 22 months before shredding
