A new middle school is coming to madison city!

The school district held a ceremonial groundbreaking today at the future home of journey middle school.

The 170-thousand square foot, 51.2 million dollar building will hold twelve hundred students.

Superintendent doctor ed nichols says "journey" will be a bit different than the other middle schools in the district.

Rather than all students moving on to one high school, they'll be split between two.

But, dr. nichols says he isn't worried about that.

"journey will have students who leave.

And i think that's a great thing.

Because i think we are a community that is united in our schools.

We have two great high schools that are in the tops in the nation, we have great elementary schools that are in the top and there's a competitiveness but at the same time there is unity.

We may be two high schools but we are one school district.

We are one community.

A new elementary school is also in the works for madison city.

Midtown elementary school will open in the fall of this year.

Journey middle school will open in the fall of 2022.
