Valley fire fighters tell us, this is the time of year they see the most structure fires... a lot of the times from holiday decorations.

Joe alaniz loves the holidays and the decorations that come with it.

01.31.15- 01.31.17 "i would make a fence of just lights" he says the first time he put up home decorations was a learning experience.

01.31.20- 01.31.26 "cause the first time i put up a whole bunch of them they burnt out cause i learned you can only connect three of them together" alaniz learned this lesson before anyone got hurt, but that's not always the case.

Every year decorations such as christmas trees, lights and candles cause hundreds of home fires.

01.37.08-01.37.10 "if you do have damaged wires it's just best to replace them" lieutenant paulo herrera with the mcallen fire department says christmas lights can be a huge danger during the holidays.

01.37.24-01.37.33 "also the use of extension cords, if they don't use the appropriate extension cord then more than likely it will cause it to over heat and it will catch fire" herrera says short circuit fires aren't uncommon this time of year.

01.35.37-01.35.45 "what you want to do is follow the manufacturer's instructions as to how many lights you can put continuously with that one circuit" but it's not just christmas lights on your home or in your yard that are the problem.

On average 12 deaths occur annually just from christmas tree fires.

01.34.17-01.34.20 "if you buy a real tree of course it needs to be watered appropriately" 01.34.30- 01.34.32 "a dry tree will catch fire quicker" and those candles from your menorah... 01.38.47-01.38.49 "you want to keep it away from any combustible materials" two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles.

As for alaniz, he's more mindful about the decorations he puts up.

Herrera says there are some christmas tree sellers who buy their trees with a fire retardant already sprayed on them.

Just ask your tree provider about the spray.
