Indiana has the 11th highest rate of uninsured children in the country.

Since the beginning of coronavirus, that number is increasing.

Unemployment means a rise in people without insurance.

News 18's anna darling talked with an indiana organization ready to help families get affordable coverage.

The coronavirus is causing thousands of people lose their jobs in indiana, and with that their health insurance.

"right now with the covid-19 issue, we're really trying to reach those people that have lost employment and as a result of that lost insurance."

Kathy walker works with the indiana rural health association.

She's a program coordinator for the connecting kids to coverage-indiana program which started last summer.

"indiana has the 11th highest rate of uninsured children in the country" and since the onset of the pandemic, that number is increasing.

"it's scary for any individual or family to be without insurance especially due to the high cost of health care.

With the covid19 issue i think that's just exemplified even more."

Normally, kathy and the team of insurance navigators travel all over the state to connect families to health insurance resources.

"i was traveling every other week up to the michiana area.

With that stay at home order, that travel has ceased."

But just because they can't travel, doesn't mean they can't help.

"we are able to do it all virtually over the phone and through electronic technology which are all hipaa compliant and secure" irha is there to help with more than just health insurance.

"we can also assist with snap and tanf and with job losses it's a lot more likely that people will be qualifying for that" anna darling news 18.
