Parents protest opening of schools as Covid 19 alert level is lowered

The working class community of Bishop Lavis in Cape Town protested outside Bergville Primary School and other schools in the community this morning.

The Western Cape Education Department last night announced they would continue with the opening of schools despite the national minister of education, Angie Motshekga, only having a press briefing this morning at 11am.

Victor Altenstead, the Secretary-General of the Bishop Lavis Action Committee (BLAC), said the provincial and national government is attempting a herd immunity strategy which has failed around the world.

He said they would protests outside the schools daily to ensure they did not open.

South Africa today downgraded to a level 3 lockdown alert after being in lockdown since 26 March to contain the Covid 19 virus.
